A Brief Analysis of the Lock-Flow

In this lock flow I try to illustrate the nuances of the various locks and the transitions that allow for the flow aspect.  A basic idea which might explain the necessary attitude toward this drill is as follows:

Imagine a joint lock as a gift that is given to you.  It offers itself up, and you simply accept the free gift of the opportunity to apply the joint lock.

You would not grab for a gift or fight your way to a gift (one hopes) and you should never force a joint lock, so if you encounter resistance to your initial attempts...you just go into the direction of resistance, and accept the lock they are offering in exchange for the one you attempted to apply.

Simply stated, they are directing you to hurt them in a different way than you initially intended to hurt them...so do not be rude...hurt them as they wish.  Therefore the lock flow is meant to teach you how to go with a given resistance, and what locks lie on that resistance line.

That being said we understand that any number of locks can create a
"lock flow" and this is just one example.  So experiment and be creative
(but efficient and realistic)  If you come up with a good one, send it in to us. Maybe we will use it...if we do, we will send you a free EMAS t-shirt
